Green Kids

October 23rd, 2011

Last week, we talked about 3D: Dinner, Decor, Delight, our new venture. We want to say thank you for your input and support, you are all invited. The interest, that our first gathering generated, brought us to planning several future 3D events. We decided to direct the profit to Jamie Oliver’s Foundation, whose philosophy corresponds with our goal to show just how enjoyable cooking and eating good food can be. We are especially inspired by Mr. Oliver’s commitment to improving school lunches.

Natalie and I are no strangers to the dilemma of keeping kids’ food healthy while still providing the appropriate social environment for them to learn and develop. Starting out, we were fortunate to find a day care run by a very special woman, who was understanding of our dietary requirements for Paloma. She made the transition from eating at home to dining with other children smooth and enjoyable. Since then, Paloma never thought anything much of her food being a little different from the rest. (Thank you Susan, we love and miss you!) Even now, in a big school environment, Paloma is able to drink her green smoothies, while still being part of the crowd. Sasha, being a year younger, caught up to Paloma as soon as his age permitted. Since then, they’ve shared many smoothies together, all shades of green.

The idea to make this video came to Natalie when we were talking about how much enthusiasm and impatience those two show while the blender is going. They both see the smoothie as a treat, something to look forward to. Ziggy Meilus, our videographer, executed it without a plan or scenario, and we are so thankful for his great work. Once the smoothies were made, Sasha and Paloma went into a sort of trance, gobbling up their drinks. Natalie and I were standing at the side, laughing.
There have been so many inspiring food videos popping up in the community, and we are very excited to finally share one of our own. We cannot wait to do more in the future. Thank you for watching!

That was delightful. Watching their faces as they waited, impatiently in Sashas case, for the green drink to arrive. Just fantastic! Thank you for sharing.

  • Kerry says:

Brilliant! That puts a smile on my face and is wonderful to see that kids can and will enjoy great food. Adorable! XX

  • sophie says:

wonderfully and amazing to me…wish it could be spread all around the world!

  • Sous Chef Sean says:

Proof is in the green pudding so to speak! I never imagined youngsters would and could enjoy something so healthy and perceived, incorrectly, as a drink they wouldn’t even try, let alone ask for seconds. Those are two cuties, and obviously healthy. Love your choice of organizations to partner with!

  • Madeleine says:

    Delightful video.

  • Natalie Scarberry says:

Let’s spread the word. As a busy mom I have to tell you that, this is the absolutely the easiest meal to make. Try it, just add ice or frozen fruits. My husband just couple years ago could not imagine drinking something like that, now he cannot start a day without it.

  • Thank you for the lovely start for the day! I truly enjoyed the video and it was so nice to see the kids enjoying the veggies! Keep up the great work!

The anticipation of healthy children comes through loud and clear..They are a testament to the cooking of Golubka and now 3D! So delicious both the children and the green smoothies! You have added a third dimension to my mornings, thanks so much.

  • Julie says:

Fantastic! I was just saying yesterday that when I was very young I loved greens, asparagus, zucchini, mushrooms and tomatoes and that all went away for about 15 years. We figured out that it was because I was introduced to junk food, and that took over! My taste buds had been tricked. Back to real food now though, thank goodness!

  • Tanya says:

Love this. My 23 month old loves my green juices, even when they don’t have fruit or carrot. Looking forward to trying more of your recipes and can’t wait for the book.

  • Elenore (E) says:

Beautiful kids, smart parents and healthy food. Great combination for life! I am lucky to know you. You changed my life 180 degrees.

Helen, thanks so much for sharing.

Anonymous 3:48, I started giving green smoothies to Paloma when she was 10 months old and she loved them right away. I use all kinds of greens, trying to vary it every day. Kale, Swiss chard, spinach, bok choy, romaine lettuce, collard greens, mixed with any kind of fruits, about a 1:3 fruit to greens ratio. I think as long as you start early and do it consistently, your kids will love leafy greens.

Alina, of course we don’t mind, thanks for sharing!

  • Amber says:

I linked this post to my monthly round-up. Great job – looks wonderful!

  • Barbara Radojlovic says:

  • Norka says:

Thank You so much for this video! It gives a lot of strength for the future, as we are soon planning to establish family, and I’m very well convinced about the importance of feeding kids, and I thin I will show this video a couple of family members on the way. Thank You again, and congratulation for your beautiful daughter! (Of course Sasha is also adorable :) )

  • Connie says:

    Such a lovely video ;o)

  • Makes me want to turn the hands of the clock backwards for my kids. They luv green juice and drink it every day but the smoothies for some crazy reason are a little trickier. I let them create their own and they can choose ingredients from fruit to greens, cucumbers and avocado, but not as much green ends up in them as I would like! Thanks for sharing, it’s so inspiring to see healthy children love their greens!

  • I love it! I can only wish when I do have my own kids they will be as excited as Sasha and Paloma were to drink green smoothies.

  • Anonymous says:

I understood you are in Florida! Where?
    all my love and blessings:)

I am a foster mum and this is the first thing I do to all the kids who come into my care. They all love it and often you will see a marked improvement in their behaviour.

I also do some respite care for kids and when I had some toddlers I put them onto green smoothies for breakfast (which they absolutely love) and their regular carer took them later to the doctor because their poo was green!
I was ordered by the department to “stop this practice” and feed them regular cereal. How crazy is this world when you are not allowed to feed kids natural, healthy stuff?

  • I admire the parents of these kids. They are trained well.
