Hey friends, we made a 2018 lunar phase calendar that’s as much an art print as it is a calendar (it’s for sale here!), and we are giving away three of them in this post. Read on for giveaway details.
We’ve always had a fascination with the cosmos, especially the moon, and over the years we’ve learned to notice how it influences our mind (it really does!). When I was a little girl, I often had a hard time sleeping during the full moon, though I was otherwise a great sleeper. I would feel awake and hyper, with my mind going into overdrive with endless thoughts and ideas. This is when my grandma would make me valerian tea, and I sipped on it until I could finally fall asleep. Nowadays, instead of the valerian, I drink something by the magical name of moon milk to chill out during the full moon, and that recipe is below.
The more I study the moon, the less I’m surprised by the fact that the full moon has the tendency to disrupt my sleep. The moon has a profound effect on the Earth. We all know that it creates tides, but it also affects the speed at which the Earth spins around its axis, impacts the growth of seeds and plants, influences the behavior of animals, and some even theorize that life on earth would appear at a later time without the moon’s gravity. It’s a powerful energy that has an effect on us all.
The next time you have a chance to look at the night sky, take a minute to notice the moon and what it looks like. You may learn something about the state of your own mindset. New Moon energy generally signifies new beginnings, and it’s a good time to go inward and find clarity. Meanwhile, the Full Moon often delivers heightened creative energy and intensified emotions. The phases in between the New and Full moons have their own characteristics as well. It’s all endlessly fascinating.
Whether you are in the know about all the moon happenings or not, we think you will love our moon phase calendar. The calendars come in two colors, and each one is 18″ x 24″ in size. They are printed by hand at Sawtooth Editions in Providence, RI on 320 gsm Coventry Rag paper, which is the crème de la crème of fine art paper. The calendar indicates every full and new moon in 2018, as well as all the phases in between. We poured our hearts into the design, and tried to make a really cool object that also happens to be useful, and will look great on any wall. It would make for a very nice New Year gift :)
2018 is a really special year in terms of moon events, too. The year will start off with a Supermoon at the beginning of January, followed by another Supermoon at the end of the same month. Both January and March will have two full moons. The second full moon in a month is called a Blue Moon, and it’s an incredibly rare event, as the name suggests. On January 31st, there will be a Full Lunar Eclipse, as well as a Supermoon that’s also a Blue Moon (!). Because we have two Blue Moons in January and March, February will be without a full moon, an occurrence sometimes called the Black Moon. Another Full Lunar Eclipse will then occur at the end of July.
Now on to the moon milk! The main goal of this drink is to calm and soothe, and you can drink it before bed on any day, it doesn’t just have to be during the Full Moon. I often change up the ingredients depending on how I feel, and my moon milk is not always pink (sometimes it’s yellow, other times it’s white), but there are a few ingredients that remain constant. Let’s break those down: nutmeg is a natural sleep aid, ashwagandha is an adaptogen proven to help deal with stress, cardamom and ginger are great for digestion, ghee/coconut oil are full of healthy fats. That whole cocktail will tuck you into bed relaxed and supported. Beet powder, though optional, is a superfood in its own right, full of antioxidants and more, but if you don’t have beet powder, try adding the same amount of ground turmeric to your moon milk. You’ll color your drink a beautiful golden color and get all of turmeric’s anti-inflammatory benefits.
G I V E A W A Y: We are giving away 3 lunar phase calendars to our readers worldwide. The winners will get to choose the color of the calendar they’ll receive. To enter the giveaway, leave a comment here telling us about your favorite sleep aid drink, or how the moon affects you personally, until January 1st, 2018.

Dear Masha,
We enjoy hemp tea in the evening. It is very mild and relaxing, with wonderful nutty flavor.
While travelling in the carribean Island we had the chance to see and feel the moon in natural envirement, without spoilling lights of the cities. A breathtaking experience I wish everybody could have.
Thank you for the chance to win one of the wonderful moon phase calenders. I love to read your einspringt Blog and try your receipts.
Have a wonderful christmas time with your family,
Claudia

Those calendars are gorgeous!! Thank you so much for the giveaway!
In my opinion, there is nothing better than a cup of hot golden milk or a cup of hot jasmin green tea to help my body find the peace I need to sleep. This ritual is also such a cosy « me » time.. it doesn’t get any better!
Jessica Barnes says
This is one of my favorite posts of yours. I love to go running or walking at night because the moon has a calming, almost meditative affect on me. Afterwards I love curling up with a warm cup of herbal tea before bed.

The Moon has always had a profound influence on my life. As a woman, it’s phases greatly effect all aspects of it. For restful sleep on waxing Moonlight nights, I enjoy a mug of Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime tea before retiring for the night.
Lyn says
Usually chamomile tea is my go to soothing preference before sleep. Sometimes a cup of chicory and dandelion root suits my mood and still allows for a restful night of sleep. I’m going to try the moon milk as a new way to prep for a dreamy night.
Andrea says
First of all, I love the design of this calendar – especially the black one! I had just been looking at lunar calendars to buy and didn’t love any of them – until this one!!
And, as always, another delish looking possibility from you! Another coincidence: I’ve just been reading about the importance of ashwsganda with the intention to buy some today, actually! I’ve always had trouble sleeping during the full moon, but never even thought about drinking something for it. Can’t wait for the full moon so I can make your recipe!! Thanks so much.
June betts-wade says

I’ve been drinking sleepytime tea, but your recipe sounds delicious ! ! !
As a woman, I take note of the phases of the moon, recognizing that these do affect my emotional state. I feel that the moon is tied especially to our women’s intuition, and I am grateful for the intuitions it helps me realize, which help me to navigate my life.

Super pretty calendars! My bedtime drink is almond milk hot cacao. :)
Marina Garcia says
Hot cocoa before bedtime is the best warming hug for a good night’s sleep here in our house. We make it with oat milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon!
Sara says
I have never tried a sleep aid drink but I think I should start! I have had the SleepyTime tea a few times and it definitely relaxes me…I’m just not sure if it’s the tea itself or just the ritual of having a warm cup of tea before bed that does it. :)
Anne says
My favourite tea is golden milk, made with creamy oat milk, turmeric, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper and a bit of honey for sweetness!
Love your site!
Katy Taylor says
Lovely! I have been working with and tracking the moon, too, and encourage my clients to see how their lives are affected by the lunar phase.
Favorite before-bed drink–it really varies! I love spiced nutmilks like the one you write about above, also sage/lavender tea, and Plum Deluxe makes a great blend–Relaxing Spa, that i really like before bed.
Nisha G says
Chamomile lavendar tea does the trick for me! And a warm cup of masala chai always makes me feel cozy and ready for bed! <3
Erica Lake says
Looking forward to trying your moon milk recipe. My favorite sleep aid drink is peppermint tea. I’ve been drinking it in the evening for years – I think my body just associates it with winding down now. Thanks so much for the giveaway.
Alexandra says
I tend to drink herbal teas, ones with ginger or turmeric are up there, sometimes chamomile . Although this time time of year wassail can sometimes be found in it’s place. Your drinks sound wonderful though, sadly I can’t have ghee (vegan) or coconut oil as I am horribly allergic to coconut .
Stephanie Nelson says
I am what my husband calls, obsessed, with the full moon and all the different information available on how the moon effects every day life. I belong to a Full Moon club and get emails before every full moon telling when the moon will be full and any information around that particular moon. I love it!
As far as beverages for relaxation and before bed I use a tea a lot that has chamomile and peppermint, with some vanilla and a little cinnamon added. It relaxes me and also the mint helps my stomach, because I have Crohns Disease and sometimes that causes a lot of sleep and relaxation issues.
Karima Bondi says
Golen Milk bring me Golden Dreams!
Eugenie Francoeur says
The moon has had an influence on my sleep, my moods, my creativity for as long as I can remember! A few days before the full moon I barely sleep a few hours. I am overwhelmed by all that energy available. Through the years I have learned not to fight or resist… it is also a moment to reveal to a deeper level another aspect of my femininity and my intuition.
As for my favorite night time drink, I normally go for a chamomile tea. I will definitely try your recipe… it sounds good!
Grace says
Love it! I sometimes have made warm golden milk (with cashew milk, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and honey) to help me sleep. However, drinking anything close to bedtime is also an issue for me as I’ll be up in the night having to go pee.
Mallory A. says
I love some chamomile chai tea or buttered hot carob to relax in the evening. Thank you for the chance to win a stunning moon calendar!
Cathie says
I too have problems at full moon. To help bring on the sleep I brew a cup of ‘insomnia tea’ that I bought in Morocco. The fellow told me what was in it but I’ve forgotten. Several herbs, for sure. If I’m feeling particularly hyper I’ll add a few drops of valerian. And always, a couple magnesium pills, to help with calmness.
Shantelle C Stephens says
I take an Epsom salts bath with some oils, lavender or patchouli mint. Golden milk with some ashwaganda. I have some beer powder, I look forward to trying your recipe. Such a lovely color.

Beautiful moon calendar. I will be trying your moon milk recipe soon – thank you.
Elise Henripin says
These are so pretty! I have a lot of trouble with sleeping, something made even worst now that I have a 7 months old son. Because of my sleep apnea, insomnia and narcolepsy, I need sleeping pills and an oxygen machine. I have found that white noise helps me a lot, which is why I keep a fan on. Chamomile tea helps set the mood too.
Margaret says
My favorite recently has been homemade coconut vanilla milk heated with raw cacao, cinnamon, ashwagandha, and a little raw honey!
Anna says
I love lighter ginger teas in the evening, but when it’s chilly I love a creamy peppermint hot cacao milk, or a spice latte — dates, creamy cashew milk, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, a good pinch of pink salt brought to a simmer and whirled in the blender. Lately I’ve also been really into a coconut butter-hemp milk golden latte with maca, raw honey, and a little ghee. These calendars are stunning! I hope to have one hanging on my wall soon. What a strong reminder of our universe’s seasons.
Tracey says
I don’t have a sleep aid drink but reading through the comments is giving me ideas to try. The calendar is gorgeous and will compliment our sky gazing whilst soaking in the hot tub.
Terri says
Love your site! We’ll be trying your moon milk during our full moon ritual this evening. ???
Anya says
Thanks so much! Enjoy.
Nicky says
Hi! I drink chamomile tea before bed. I especially love harvesting my own fresh chamomile as it’s flavour is sweeter and more perfumed than the dried bought stuff. Planting, growing and harvesting with the moon is a tangible way to witness and connect with the moons monthly circuit.
Laurel says
your moon milk is almost the same as my daily bedtime drink! i’ve found that nutmeg is the only way to make ashwagandha palatable for me, and i’ll try adding cardamom, that sounds so good.
the calendars are beautiful!!
natalie says
what beautiful calendars! and a lovely way to follow the moon :) my night ritual doesn’t currently include a beverage, so i am excited to try this recipe. i do take two magnesium capsules at night to aid elimination, and in the beginning i had very wild and vivid dreams! my most favorite moon memory was watching it set over the pacific ocean. it turned a gorgeous amber glow just before sinking below the water’s horizon.
Maggie says
I use valerian laced tea to help me when I’m particularly struggling. I use this one called Mothers Little Helper full of hibiscus which lowers blood pressure and peppermint and other beautiful petals. So good.
Tracking my period against the moon has been helpful for me too. It affects a lot but that one is so closely tied.
Really love these charts!
Oksana says

I have to say I’m a traditionalist and love my sleepy time tea routine.
But I do full and new moon ritual each month. During full moons one sets goals and new moons you release the ones you could not achieve. Not only is it a wonderful markage to pass time, but it is a monthly practice of self forgiveness and rebirth. New and full moons have now become my favorite days of each month.
Kendall says
I love Valerian or almost any tea in the evening. I especially like ginger tea during the colder months; just warming myself from the inside helps me relax and sleep. I hope to win the lunar calendar and pay more attention to how its phases affect me.
maia says
Lately I’ve been enjoying dandelion root tea before bed. It helps with digestion and has a very calming earthiness. Beautiful calendars!
Leslie Suttkus says
I would consider myself to be unique in my devotion to and love for the moon. Through my observances and studies, I have learned that it is the Yin most side of the moon, the new moon, that has a direct connection to the Feminine Divine as Sophia. I see her as the one who has been trodden upon. The one who has been neglected and overlooked for her value, her wisdom, knowledge and understanding for humanity. The Yang of The Moon, the Full Moon, is the more dominant or active side of the Feminine Divine. Typically, I see her as being more associated with Mother Mary/Miriam. In the privacy of my home, I observe the movement of the moon each day. I have 22 stones marked with Hebrew Letters on each one. Daily, I move the stones on my altar according to the lunar calendar and the solar calendar. For me, the day begins at sunset. Through the lens of the meridian system, it is The Triple Warmer who is associated with the Yang of the Moon, while it is The Spleen meridian who is associated with the Yin Side. Again, this point illustrates the quiet and gentle nature of the Yin of the Moon which society in this day and time seems to have lost connection with.
Angela says
I love every kind of tea in the evening, these days I am enjoying ginger and lemon tea, to keep me warm inside. Love the calendar

O WOW! This would be great and so useful for our kitchen garden. We use moon fases for sowing, replanting and harvest as we work al in-sinc with nature.
We harvested loads of goodies from our garden this year but we are still improving!
Two years ago we planted a lot of Verveine that we use for our tea in summer that I absolutely love.
But our favorite WINTER drink is Ginger, Lemon & Honey in boiling hot water. The ginger and lemon come out of our own “Orto” and the honey from the neighbor. In front of the fireplace it is the best after dinner drink you could wish for.
jenn says

Lena Kosova Wittrock says
I like to make rosehip tea before bed …planted wild rose bushes( rosa canina) from seeds I brought from my native eastern Europe( Slovakia). But golden milk haldi ka doodh, Ayurvedic traditional milk) is quickly becoming my go to during these cold and dark advent nights…

Laila says
Lately I’ve been drinking Organic India’s Cinnamon Rose tea before bed. It is wonderfully fragrant! I’m a big fan of moonbathing in my backyard during the full moon.
REBECCA says
Love that you made this moon milk and moon calendars!! I tended to notice that I slept less soundly near the full moon in my last apartment, which was situated on the edge of town where it was quiet and dark. While I don’t miss that sleepless aspect, now living in a more urban neighborhood, I realize how much less in tune with the moon than I was then! Lately, I’ve been mixing up my own herbal blend, which among others, has tulsi, skullcap, and licorice, for settling my mind and body.
Monicka says
Beautiful calendar!
My go to sleep aid drink is a cup of chamomile with lots of honey and lemon…and I eat a banana. When I was younger I read somewhere that bananas help you sleep so I always include them.
The night I met my partner there was a full moon, we celebrate our “mooniversary” every full moon. My mood is absolutely tied to the moon, I am the person people talk about when they say “well it’s a full moon tonight”. I get very manic and often try to channel it into cooking or being creative in another way.
Susanna says
What a lovely calendar for me and my friends
I am the Moonchild myself and always been inspired by and affected by the moon
My cycle and my moods and energy and my sleep is influenced very much by the moon
New moon giving me a fresh energy and full moon feeling like wanting to deep sleep more

I cannot beat chamomile for a calming evening ritual.
Anna says
I can feel myself getting a lot more anxious two days prior until two days after a full moon. It took some time until I realised that there is a connection between my mind and body and the moon phases. On nights where I struggle with sleeping, a warm chamomile and tumeric elixir with manuka honey helps my to go to bed.
Jana says
I steep hops and grapefruit peel or dandelion root and ginger for a relaxing evening tea.
thefolia says
The moon indeed is fascinating and the calendars are a lovely tribute to the mysterious globe we take for granted. I like to keep it simple with boiling water and chamomile, preferrably just harvested leaves. Sweet dreams!

I live in Atlantic Canada, and honour the full moon every month with a group of friends. We go to the ocean for a beach fire and at midnight (or close to it), we run into the water naked and screaming. It is spectacular.

Living in Maine it is easy to spot the moon and be in awe by the whole sky. When the moon is full and bright, I find inspiration and it’s easy to get lost in the brightness of the night. I like to make this tea before going to bed, for some reason it is very comforting, its called “Jeanne’s Brain Tea” it’s made with green tea, cinnamon stick, organic orange peel, unsweetened blueberry juice and unsweetened tart cherry juice. It’s light, delicious, and absolutely lovely. The recipe is from Rebecca Katz and Mat Edelson book The healthy Mind.
sophie says
Love the new direction your website is taking!

I move to Egypt in September and discovered an amazing plant that is here called Halfbar. It tastes a bit bitter and older ladies swear that it cures everything and now I drink it in the evening and really enjoy it. I usually don’t have troubles sleeping but I appreciate a good, warm tea before the bed.
And talking about the moon, nothing beats the view on the stars and the moon from the desert away from the city lights and noise.
:)
Carol Robbins says
I like tea and often make a big cup of herbal tea (turmeric ginger is nice) and take it to bed with me. If I wake up in the night I’ll take a swig, and if there’s any left in the morning I’ll drink it cold! The moon has a profound effect on me – and I’d love to have a calendar to help chart it. Thank you!
judith says
Golden coconut milk or lavender-mint tea sweetened with honey… not too much though.
Love your blog!
Genevieve says
I love a cup of Earl Grey Green Tea with a pinch of lavender in it in the early evening.
Jules says
Wauw, this is great.
Since I am living in a big city (Brussels), I don’t gaze at the moon often enough.
However, when I am traveling I pay extra attention.
What always fascinates me is the interaction between the moon and the stars – a lot of moon means less stars, and little moon means (or: can mean) a lot of stars. I find it difficult to choose, since I love both so much.
A couple of years ago I was traveling through the Indian desert (in North-India), when our guide set we would settle down for the night, eat a meal and sleep there, under the sky. This was for him, he said, his ‘billion stars hotel’.
When I feel stressed or anxious, I think about the most beautiful starry sky we saw back then.
This moon calendar would be great to pay extra attention to the sky, and its elements, in my day to day life as well !
Kind regards, and keep up the good work (the self-care interviews are great).

Ólöf Haraldsdóttir says
The moon has a significant meaning for me regarding my children. Also .. I can´t seem to sleep the night before full moon!
my sleep aid drink.. that I actually drink before sleep every night is warm milk with some boiled oats, turmeric, cinnamon, raw cacao, vanilla, cayenne, black pepper and a generous scoop of coconut oil … and a drop of honey from time to time..
Brooke says
The way the moon affects me personally is that it’s very calming to me – the fact that nights are so quiet + the pretty white light makes me feel so relaxed! My favorite sleep aid drink is milky hot tea. Any time I sit down and sip a hot beverage I can feel myself relax.
Frances De Sanctis says
for years I followed the phases and signs of the moon. When my Goldendoodle was diagnosed w/cancer I spent 8 months totally focused on making every day the best one for him, and us. I regret getting away from focusing on celestial things. Your calendar is just beautiful! After reading one of your self help posts I purchased Golde Tumeric Tonic frothed in warm 50/50 full fat coconut milk & coconut water. I adore it & find the bit of cardamom & cinnamon & black pepper in it so delicious.
Brad Furman says
The moon affects me personally because I just enjoy viewing it so much. I have always had a fascination with space and to be able to see the moon and to think that it is actually a celestial body circling us is just wild. The moon is such a beautiful thing.
Brita Holmberg says
Oh La Luna! I’m a Cancer so I have a deep connection with the moon and her cycles. I think the Dark Moon is my favorite. Mysterious, quiet and meditative. I also love to check in with how I’m feeling and see what sign the moon is in. And say something like oh that’s why I’m feeling extra sensitive because she’s in another water sign Luke Scorpio or Pisces. I love sitting under her with a steaming hot cup of cocoa!
Michele says
I’ve always responded to the moon, more physically when I was younger, and more meditatively now in middle age. This soothing recipe is lovely. I would modify it to leave out the ashgawanda as it’s a nightshade that is not so good for me. Everyone can tweak to their specs :)
Elizabeth says
These are so beautiful!
My go-to sleep remedy is a very strong chamomile tea with soy milk. Occasionally I’ll have golden milk instead.
I’ve only recently started to be aware of the phases of the moon, and it’s become such a great way to connect with Mother Earth. I am finding that personally I am a bit tense during the new moon and calm during the full mooon.
Annette says
I never really enjoyed warm milk as a child, but I’ve always just drank some hot green tea like jasmine to get cozy and sleepy.
Thia says
Anya and Masha,
I love moon calendars, and I particularly like the circular form you’ve used for each month in yours.
For me, the Moon is all about the circle…, cycles, and tides, comings and goings, fullness and emptiness.
I often contemplate the Moon, in her cycles, noticing how she effects mine.
I love to think of how she is a witness to all that we humans have done. All these eons, she has been there…, observing the rise and fall of entire civilizations,…watching all we do, shining on saint and sinner alike.
I am grateful for her light shining in the dark of night.
AL says
Chamomile & lavender tea with honey! And a book before bed. Living in the desert without light pollution, I’m up all night with a full moon and really feel it’s power especially on my dreams
Rachel Washington says
Hello! I love this post, my mother has been sending me your recipes for awhile now and I love the way you create healthy meals that are not only beautiful to look at, but also taste good!
I’ve always been amazed that before modern technology, people successfully used the moon to navigate so precisely, whether they were walking on land or traveling in a vessel. But I never really thought abt the physical effect the moon has on us all. Definitely food for thought!
I like to have tea before bed, usually a combination of either dried lemon balm, chamomile or lavender. But a creamy nut milk with those spices seems perfect for the autumn/winter season! I can also picture myself sipping it on a chilly spring morning as the sun comes up. Thanks for your lovely blog/website and for sharing such positive information in a way where it doesn’t alienate anyone!!

I live in a cabin on the edge of some woods and get glimpses of our Beautiful Moon Grandmother through the trees. This time of year, in Winter…is when I get to see her and experience her Light, the most. I purposefully positioned my bed by a window so that I would be able to see her on the nights when she’s up…and when it’s not too cloudy. When I first get into bed I always look for her, and when she is visible I greet her and thank her for her precious Light.
I LOVE lunar calendars and am so grateful to you for making this Offering.
Betsy says
Having tried many herbal approaches thru the decades, what I’ve found that works best for my particular body is a tincture of california poppy taken a half hour before bedtime.
Thank you so much for all you do and share so generously with us!
robyn says
Thank you for the opportunity to acquire this calendar.
I love herbal tea at night. It has a soothing and calming effect that helps me sleep soundly at night.
Have a happy and healthy New Year to you and yours.

I am a high school science teacher, and didn’t have a very strong relationship with the moon before I taught physics. One of the lessons is teaching the students about the moon phases and how to figure out whether the moon is waxing or waning by investigating which side is lit up and reasoning where the moon must be. It became a really beautiful practice for me as well. I look at the moon and think about when it rose and when it will set, and generally appreciate the cosmos!

I live in the Northwest Territories, Canada, where it seems the biggest thing is the sky. We get about five hours of daylight at this latitude and time of year so I am very aware of the moon. Over the past year I began to pay more attention to it and its affect on my body and natural surroundings. The full moon makes me feel energized and helps me predict when it will be the coldest, but also the brightest nights. Six months from now, we will have 24 hours of daylight and the moon will be a pale disk in the blue sky, growing brighter each month as we move back toward winter again.

My grandmother used to say that the Full Moon was when all the crazies and women alike got even wilder (of course, all with a knowing twinkle in her eye). Often she would warm me milk with raw honey with a side of liquid magnesium to help ease nervous tension and aid sleep (all the women in my family swear by it). Also, chamomile that my mother drinks every night, a very nostalgic flower for me and the first herbal tea I started drinking. All the best for the new year, and all the love xx

Favorite bedtime drink is just a cup of herbal tea. The almost full moon guided me home last night – amazing in it’s brightness on the last day of 2017.

A favorite calming drink I enjoy is classic golden milk: warmed milk with cardomom, turmeric, honey, and sometimes ghee!
