Spiced Hot Chocolate and a Cookbook of Our Own

We’ve been waiting for so long to announce this news that I am having a hard time writing a cohesive first sentence. But here it is – we are working on a cookbook! It will be published by Roost Books and is due to come out in the Spring of 2014. We’ve been working on it all summer with the help of our wonderful editor over at Roost and the amazing Alison Fargis of Stonesong as our agent. The book will be hardcover, with all new recipes, and lots of photos of course.

More often than not, a new post on Golubka is born out of a food crush that I acquire during the week. When it comes to food, I crush often and hard. This week, my heart was stolen by homemade oat milk. Something about its mild taste and grainy texture really does it for me and brings me back to those childhood breakfasts that would frequently consist of a steaming bowl of oatmeal. Food related nostalgia is one of the things that drives me the most as a home cook, is it that way for everyone?
Making oat milk is just as simple, if not easier, as making nut milk. Just soak and blend, no straining required, and you are all set.

Here’s a juice we cannot get enough of this summer. When heirloom tomatoes begin to shine in their rainbow of colours, when cucumbers are sweet and herbs are in abundance – that is the time for this healthful drink.

All the credit for this juice goes to my husband, a lover of V8 in the past. I especially like it with the addition of dill, it’s such a characteristically summer herb. Include some salt and pepper to spice things up, my husband even likes to add Old Bay. As you can imagine, this juice could also satisfy a Bloody Mary fan. You know, minus the kick.

I didn’t specify any amounts in the recipe. All of the veggies included, especially heirloom tomatoes, have a crazy size range in the summer. Just try to have an even ratio or use more of your favourite vegetable for a stronger taste.
We’ve been having a very rainy summer with loud daily thunderstorms. We wouldn’t mind it wasn’t for Paloma’s newly developed fear of thunder and lightning. Otherwise a very brave girl, she weeps under the blanket for the whole length of a storm. Hopefully she will grow out of it soon. Any similar stories among the crowd?

Garden Juice
summer tomatoes
cucumbers
bell pepper
celery
carrots
fresh herbs such as dill, parsley, cilantro, mint, oregano
sea salt, freshly ground black pepper, any other spices of choice

You will probably need a juicer that is not centrifugal – single or double gear. When juicing, alternate soft and hard vegetables and herbs, using a fruit attachment. Add salt, pepper, and spices to taste at the end. Simple!

Grapefruit Smoothie

One of my favourite things to do when shopping at the market is to ask the vendors how they like to prepare and eat their own product. The stories and recipes that I get out of this are unfailingly fascinating and delicious.
One of my favourite stands at our greenmarket is one that specializes in microgreens. When buying, the sprouts are clipped from the soil right in front of you, as fresh as possible. This past Saturday the nice microgreens grower had a box of beautiful local grapefruits with him and was kind enough to share his seasonal breakfast recipe. He said that this refreshing smoothie keeps him full until lunch.

We’ve been enjoying mild Florida winter and haven’t missed one market day so far. Our local farms have been doing an amazing job in supplying us with an incredible variety of greens and other produce. I am so grateful and don’t want it to ever end.
Paloma started going to a Russian Saturday school. She proudly drinks her green smoothies and snacks on olives and goji berries during the breaks, generating curious looks and questions from other parents. But last week the teacher gave lollipops to the kids in the classroom as part of their learning activities. She said that they were “all natural,” but when it comes to lollipops, what does that really mean? Paloma never tasted candy like that before, and I wasn’t planning to introduce it to her any time soon. So far, she is the only one among friends her age who is cavity free.

We are also very excited to announce that some of the posts on Golubka will now be available in French. Geraldine Olivo of My Sweet Faery is our amazing translator. She has been working very hard on providing links to online stores and tutorials next to the ingredients that may not be familiar or readily available in Europe. We are thrilled to be bilingual and endlessly thankful to Geraldine for all her work. So far, we have all the 3D tango posts translated.

Grapefruit Smoothie
juice of 2 large grapefruits
1-2 ripe bananas
1 avocado (optional, this was my own addition to the vendor’s recipe)
fresh ginger – to taste
sunflower microgreens/sprouts – 2 handfuls or more to taste

In a blender, combine all the ingredients until smooth and enjoy.
